Detroit from the French word meaning the Strait is the largest city in the state of Michigan. It is a major port city on the Detroit River. As a geographical oddity, Detroit is the only U.S. city that looks south to Canada.

Its architecture is indicative of some of America's finest, and many of its buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Detroit stands for the U.S. automotive industry and is an important source of popular music, i.e. Motor City and Motown. The name Detroit if often used when referring to the Metro Detroit area.
